REVIEW OF:
“Deus Ex Machina”
BY: Netzer

We have had several requests lately for Messianic Music which would appeal to the younger generation, and Netzer seems to fit the bill. As Phil Pearlman’s son, and Messianicmusic.com web-master, I’m delighted to review Netzer’s “Deus Ex Machina,” which very well may be one of the first Messianic albums of this genre. Netzer describe themselves as “a unique blend of original hard rock with Biblically themed lyrics.”

The first song that I have chosen is “All Alone,” a grunge song showing the dire need for Yeshua in this world filled with pain.

For my second selection, I chose Netzer’s rendition of “Mayim”, a traditional Jewish song. Netzer have transformed Mayim into a fast, and energy filled punk song.

“Departerra” is a slower song than many of the others on the album, lamenting the second coming of the Lord, and the “Departerra” of the faithful into paradise.

This CD is a must have for any young Messianic. As my father says from time to time, “two Shofars up!"

Biography of Netzer

Netzer is composed of Messianic believers from San Diego, CA. This band originally was formed as a worship band, but eventually adapted into a unique blend of original hard rock with Biblically themed lyrics. The members of the band have all grown up at Kehilat Ariel Messianic Synagogue. Alan, on lead vocals; and David Kasdan, on bass guitar are both currently in college. James Kelley, guitar; and David Castle, guitar and vocals; will be in college in Fall 2004. Aaron Kasdan, the drummer, is still in high school.

The band is still strongly dedicated to expressing their faith even when the majority of their shows are in secular venues. Netzer's speed punk/reggae version of Mayim, using Hebrew straight from Isaiah, is a favorite at the all-ages concert halls that Netzer has played. The word Netzer itself is "branch" in Hebrew, which is a reference to the Messiah (Isaiah 11:1). Aaron also used computer programs to create two of the songs, sidetrAcKed and 1sa1ah [53]. The band is continuing to write new material and is hoping to go on a nationwide tour in the future.
